Ghost Hunting 101:
The Psychic Connection
For all the toys and gadgets used in supernatural investigations, we are dealing with
something that is beyond the realm of nature as we know it. Otherwise it wouldn't be
called "Super"-natural. So any narrative on the subject must include something about
psychic abilities.
The most commonly tested forms of psychic ability (aka E.S.P.) are Clairvoyance (the
ability to read other people's thoughts), Telepathy (the ability to project your
thoughts to other people), Precognition or Foresight (the ability to see events before
they happen), and Telekinesis or TK (the ability to remotely move objects with the
power of your mind). But there are other forms of ESP. Amongst these are Remote sight
(the ability to see what is happening someplace you are not - or from a direction or
location other than your physical location - in real time) and the ability to sense or
manipulate energy fields. Since spirits have no corporeal bodies, and therefore cannot
physically effect the air around us to be easily heard or seen, most communication with
them falls into the realm of one or more of these abilities.
Since spirits are primarily energy and thought (emotion, feelings, memories, etc) a lot
of communication with them involves clairvoyance. Televised examples of this would be
any time you see a psychic on TV. Admittedly there are a LOT of fakes on TV, but this
is the types of ESP they are supposedly using.
Occasionally a spirit can be heard by someone who shows no particular clairvoyant
abilities. In this case, it is the spirit who is exhibiting the ability of telepathy.
And sometimes they show off the ability of telekinesis (as when a poltergeist is
experienced). And in the case of Electronic Voice Phenomenon (or EVP) it is a spirit
who is manipulating an energy field to produce the recording.
In my previous entries, I have talked about keeping records, and carefully looking
over information collected. To do this you must keep your senses sharp and your wits
about you. When dealing with the supernatural, it is more than just 5 senses you need
to work with. The more you develop your "Extra Senses", the more information you will
be able to gather. And the more info you have at your disposal, the more informed a
conclusion you can reach about what you are investigating.
Since there are several books out there on this subject, I won't go into the process of
sharpening your ESP in this forum. I will simply advise you to check you local library
on the subject.Besides, it would take way to long to cover it here.
